Example menus for early years settings

13 November 2017

A series of example menus and guidance have been published today to support healthier food provision in early years settings in line with current government dietary recommendations.

The 'scalable' menus for different settings have been drawn up by Public Health England, the Department for Education and the Department of Health, and form a core strand of the government’s Childhood Obesity Plan.

Early years settings may make use of these to inform and help them prepare healthy, balanced and nutritious meals, as set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

Guidance includes:

  • Expert advice on the types of foods to provide for breakfast, lunch, tea and snacks for children aged six months to four years
  • Two sets of three-week seasonal menus and recipes
  • Top-tips on meal planning
