One week until our Young Marketeers set up shop at Borough Market

26 January 2022
On Thursday 3rd February, 12pm – 2pm, students from four secondary schools will set up shop at the world-famous Borough Market in London, selling a winter warming lunch of soup and freshly baked bread.

The students learned to create and sell the homemade recipes as part of our Young Marketeers programme, which has now been running for 10 years. All money raised at the sale next week will be donated to our friends at The Felix Project, with every £1 providing enough food for six tasty meals for vulnerable people across the capital.

In teams of six from four London schools, our Young Marketeers learned to make three tasty soups with School Food Matters’ food teacher, Sharon, and attended ciabatta bread making masterclasses at Bread Ahead in Borough Market, before returning to their schools to refine their recipes and plot their sales strategies.

The schools are now at the final hurdle before the sale, with the soups going through Borough Market’s taste test to ensure quality.

A Young Marketeer from St Paul's Way Trust School said: “I really enjoyed making the soup. The best bit was when we served the finished soup and knew that we had made it ourselves from scratch.”

The Young Marketeers programme teaches students about how to avoid food waste, eat seasonally and develop their cookery skills as well as giving them the entrepreneurial skills to market and sell their goods, thanks to advice from Borough Market’s expert traders.

To date, the partnership with Borough Market has seen more than 200 schools attend ‘trader training’. Some students have grown their own fruit and veg and sold it at the market, while others have made soup from surplus produce. These sales have funded over 30,000 meals for families in need via The Felix Project.

The students will be selling their freshly made produce in the Green Market at Borough Market on Thursday 3rd February, 12pm – 2pm. Please come down and support our Young Marketeers, enjoy some tasty soup and know you’re supporting families who need a nutritious meal.

The schools taking part in the Winter Sale are: Wapping High School (Tower Hamlets), Lilian Baylis Technology College (Kennington), St Gabriel's College (Lambeth) and St Paul's Way Trust School (Tower Hamlets).
